Gcobisa Magazi: A Journey of Resilience and Authenticity
Gcobisa Magazi (Director in the Office of DDG: Public Finance, National Treasury), a powerhouse in the financial sector, captivated the audience with her personal story. Having overcome numerous challenges during her upbringing in the Eastern Cape, she drew courage from her faith, the unwavering support of her community (particularly her aunt) and her great resilience.

Gcobisa's professional journey from her humble beginnings as a part-time university employee to a position in the National Treasury and her later involvement in global governance issues is a testament to her unwavering determination and ability to seize opportunities. Her reflections on leadership emphasised the importance of authenticity, community support and the role of women in empowering each other. Gcobisa's message was clear: be vulnerable, stand by your truth and support other women in their professional development.
“Strength and sensitivity are not opposites; they coexist. It takes a deep sense of self and empathy to lead effectively, especially in diverse and intergenerational teams. Remember, the exterior we see is often just a façade. True leadership comes from understanding and connecting with the soul behind the surface, respecting every individual’s contribution, and acknowledging the struggles that shape us.” - Gcobisa Magazi
A Panel of Trailblazers
The keynote was followed by a panel discussion with Ipeleng Selele (Group CEO: RRS Trade and Investments), Mabatho Seeiso (Expert Trustee), Magdalene Siwela (Chairperson: Tshwane Municipal Provident Fund) and Gcobisa Magazi. The panellists each shared their unique experiences and insights and offered valuable perspectives on success, leadership and the obstacles women face in the workplace.

Ipeleng Selele, a seasoned entrepreneur and corporate leader, highlighted the importance of resilience, self-belief, and giving back. Her journey, marked by international experience as well as a deep commitment to South Africa, is a testament to the power of perseverance and purpose.
Ipeleng shared that her success is deeply rooted in a blend of personal attributes and experiences. She emphasised that a strong foundation often begins at home, where family values and lessons shape professional growth. Similarly to Gcobisa Magazi, she acknowledged that hard work and dedication are essential, as success requires a significant personal investment. Diverse experiences help develop a well-rounded perspective, while determination — being well prepared and clear about goals — ensures impactful contributions. Maintaining professionalism and composure and overcoming challenges with grace is essential.
"Be a good person. Ultimately, our titles and achievements matter less than our actions and character. At the end of the day, it's our humanity and kindness that define us, not our accolades or status. Charity begins at home, and staying true to our roots reminds us of what truly matters." - Ipeleng Selele
Magdalene Siwela, a Deputy Director at the City of Tshwane Municipality, shared her experiences as a woman in government, emphasising the need for women to assert themselves and demonstrate their capability. Her outspoken nature and dedication to women's rights have shaped her career and inspired others.
"As women, we need to know, try to do things for ourselves, not that we are competing with men, but to show that, no, we are not trophies. We are human beings with friends, and can do the job that is put before us." - Magdalene Siwela
Mabatho Seeiso, a pioneering director and expert trustee in financial services, shared valuable insights into the challenges and rewards of her career. Her journey serves as an example of leadership and understanding the elements that contribute to building a unique brand. She also emphasised the importance of creating an enabling environment for women. Mabatho provided a compelling perspective on personal branding and authenticity for women, emphasising the idea that each person has a unique "magic" that drives them forward. This magic can manifest itself in both small and large ways and can make an individual stand out in any environment, be it the boardroom or the workplace.
"Every individual possesses a unique 'magic' that propels them forward. Understand the components that make up your unique magic, whether in small or big ways." - Mabatho Seeiso
